I love writing. Love is giving. God is love. I have written this before here at Give Your Story: God wants us to have a relationship with Him. He loves us and wants us to Love Him back! We benefit from giving. Giving is love. Jesus gave his life for us-out of love.
Do you remember the stories in Mathew of the Sadducees and Pharisees (experts in law) being silenced by Jesus? First the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus in his words. Then the Sadducees tested Jesus. Then the Pharisees got together again with their final jeopardy question, asking Jesus what is the most important commandment? Do you remember His answer?
Mathew 22: 37-40 NIV Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Most Christians know this Jesus story. Most people know this part of the story. There is more to this story! It doesn’t end there. However, Jesus then asked the Pharisees a rhetorical question. Give this some thought:
In Mathew 22: 41 – 45 NIV While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them. “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit calls him Lord”? For he says, “The Lord said to my Lord (Psalm 110:1): “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” If then David calls him ‘Lord’ How can he be his son?” No one could say a word in reply, and from that day no one dared ask him any more questions.
What does this question mean? Simply put, the classic commentary on these verses is, Christ is God. Now I have written here before that I am no biblical scholar and I don’t claim to be one and I do not refute truth’s that are written by biblical scholars. However, I do like to use the Jesus method of interpretation when I look at scripture. If we look back at Mathew 22: 37-40 Jesus says the greatest command is Love. I like the additional interpretation that Jesus is not only saying Christ is Lord, but he is also saying:
LOVE ME.
