Yesterday, my wife was the Spiritual leader in our family. Why? Because, I had some discord building in me, and I needed someone else to take the lead. I needed someone else to lead by example. I needed to be reeled in, so that I could SEE HIM. That is how our marriage works.
Due to the nature of my past, and disconnection with Jesus and God, I would have to say that for most of our marriage, my wife was the Spiritual leader.
My wife and I happen to share the same roots in our religious upbringing. From day one of our relationship, we held common ground in our Savior being the TRUE Jesus of Nazareth in the same religious tradition. For the last 29 years and 25 years of marriage, TOGETHER, we have grown in Christ. For the past 9 years, TOGETHER we have been Spiritual leaders to each other. TOGETHER we have been Spiritual leaders to our children.
About 9 years ago, the insanity of being a parent with multiple kids involved in multiple activities, was returning once again after our big move south. I sat on the front porch with my wife and made the pitch, that we needed to focus our direction for our kids on Jesus, not sports and other activities. If we were going to run around every night, it should be for Jesus first, then other activities. We came to a general agreement together, that the focus will be Jesus and our church. Jesus and Christian youth activities first, then our kids could participate in 1-2 additional other activities, pending the time constraints of each outside activity. I would use this as an example of me being a Spiritual leader in the moment.
I could sit and write to you, so many different ways that my wife and I have Waxed and Waned as the Spiritual leaders in our marriage over the course of these past 9 years since I found Jesus.
What is my point?
JESUS IS THE SPIRITUAL LEADER
The point is, that marriage is not about who is the Spiritual leader. Marriage is about being a TEAM. Marriage is about being a Servant leader in the Spirit to each other, rather than anyone gender role of who is the Spiritual leader.
TOGETHER. Marriage is about Honor and Unity of each other and family.
This starts Directly through the Love of Jesus.
If you need scripture to back that up, Well, I got that!
John 14:6 – Jesus is the direct way to God
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
- Jesus is very clear that He is the TRUTH.
- The TRUTH is – not through priest, not through prophet, not through any human. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus.
John 10:27 – His sheep hear His voice directly
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
- Jesus says we will listen to His voice. Not someone else, but Him directly.
- Jesus says they follow me. It is a personal relationship with Him.
Matthew 11:28 – Invitation to All
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
- He invites us ALL who are willing to come to Him.
Acts 2:38-39 – The promise is for ALL
“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins… The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
- The message of Jesus and the gift of the Spirit is for EVERYONE, regardless of status, background, or distance.
Hebrews 1:1-2 – God speaks to us through His Son
“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…”
- Jesus is now the direct voice and message from God — not through others, as in the Old Testament.
I believe that God speaks through people, both women and men in Servant leadership, In the Spirit-TOGETHER.
In addition, WITH EMPHASIS:
I believe in Jesus. Jesus is the example. Jesus is the method we should use to be Servant leaders In the Spirit to each other and our families. I believe that the bible and certainly Jesus, does not represent contradiction. I believe, we are to use scripture to represent Jesus ALLways. While we can look to some examples of biblical characters as an example, Jesus is the ultimate example of THE Spiritual Servant Leader. This is our TRUE guide to Spiritual Leadership.
This is my heart speaking. This is what I believe is the heart of Jesus. His Love extends to us lifting us ALL up equally, as we should do for each other.
Jesus loves and cares for US ALL EQUALLY.
WE HAVE ACCESS TO HIM DIRECTLY – not through a man called “The spiritual leader”.
Sometimes we find Him directly, sometimes we find Him through circumstances. Sometimes we find Him through EACH OTHER. We should aim to find Him TOGETHER in our marriage and families.

We are called to love Him, Love one another, and nudge each other in Service, Honor and Unity.
THRIVING TOGETHER In the Spirit, for ONENESS in JESUS!
