God Creates

Before we discuss Adam Ate (Genesis 3:1-24) , we do need to refer back to Genesis 2. Let us also note that the very last thing God did in the Creation story is create the woman. Her creation is vital to God’s plan. In her is a womb, that will one day carry our Savior. In her, is the breath of life of the continuation of creation that comes from within her womb.

She is co-creator of life with God.

Adam Ate

Genesis 2:16

And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

God Gives man Free Will.

God causes Adam to fall into a deep sleep and takes one of his ribs to create bone of bones and flesh of flesh. And the man called her woman. The crafty serpent approaches the woman.

Evil Pierces the World.

Genesis 3:1-7

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

FULL STOP!

Earlier in Genesis 2, God had instructed Adam that if he eats from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, he will surely die. Eve also knew this fact as the serpent references this in his opening question to the woman. “Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the Garden?” We also know that Adam was with Eve, when she ate the fruit and gave some to him. They were both guilty. As a result, death and shame entered the world. Did Adam and Eve die? Not immediately in the worldly sense. The connection to death in this part of the story is spiritual death. Their perfect relationship with God dies from their actions. They knew they were naked and had no shame in Genesis 2:25. Now they both hid from the Lord God and were shamed by their nakedness. Then they both told lies to God about their actions. The man blamed the woman. The woman blamed the serpent.

Sin and Death entered the world.

God makes child birthing painful for the woman.
