This is How You Do It.

Want to see a great example of owning your mistakes?

This week we have been talking about ownership of our mistakes. It’s not easy to do. Its hard to face the truth. Especially when it’s ugly. We want to look at everyone else. We want to stick the blame on others. The sad thing? Many people have no clue they are doing it. They walk around justified, regardless of the circumstances. They deflect the truth by minimizing. The more usual response of these Captain No-Faults and Gaslight Superintendents is to blame someone else. It’s quite amazing. However, when the egg gets obvious. When the crap gets deep. When its unavoidable that we made a mistake, we have two choices.

Double Down? Or Eat Humble Pie.

Let me introduce you to Tony Romo – Former Dallas Cowboys Star Quarterback and NFL Announcer. I am a fan. Someone showed me the Cowboys and I grew up a Cowboys fan. That is just how it is. As a fan, I watched Tony’s career closely. If you didn’t know, there was a BIG moment where Tony had to eat humble pie a while back. Tony had some serious back injuries from playing football and it came to a point where he needed to decide if he wanted to continue to walk or if he wanted to keep trying to be a Super Bowl winner. The choice is obvious. OR at least it seems obvious. His career briefly went towards golf and then he was given the opportunity to be a CBS NFL Announcer. Just as any public figure encounters, there is always room for controversy. Sometimes, people can be really rotten. They love to call out others while never addressing their own pile of cow dung that is often deeper and more foul smelling that any dirt they can conjure up on someone else. More recently, Tony was involved in an incident of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He plead no contest and has his legal consequences. He also has other fall out from this mess. I have to say, his letter to the public is a HUGE piece of humble pie.

Humble pie might look good. Humble pie does not taste good. But did you know?

There is FRUIT in Humble Pie.

Here is Tony:

This journey will take action. This journey will take follow through. The ownership has to be more than simple words. The ownership needs to include action. I have high hopes and much confidence in Tony’s character here.

This is how you begin to make amends. This is how you own your mistakes.

This is how you eat Humble Pie.
