FUN FRIDAYS! – FUN with a TWIST

This Friday, I have Fun for you with a TWIST.

You have to ask yourself. What was Fun this week?

Something really funny happened last week that I wanted to share with you. However, while no matter how I look at it, it’s funny yet it’s not. When we tell people about it, they also laugh. It’s just how our society is. However, if the scenario had the opposite sexes involved, it’s not funny anymore. That’s the not. Had the situation been reversed, it might be cute to a point, and maybe somewhat funny, but not? I have struggled with whether I should share this or not, all week. The why is, in many ways it is quite harmless, however, in many ways it seems to feed into the very thing I stand against. Male Power over women. For some reason, I feel compelled to continue on, writing this post. It’s an internal struggle. I am wrestling with it. I am looking for answers. So today, go ahead and laugh. Have Fun! It’s ok. BUT – It’s not. And I want you to think about this.

I was at the beach with my son fishing this past week. We were on the Pier. Fishing was meh, and some folks where leaving and some other spots had opened up. One guy was catching Bluefish in our vicinity but other than that, no one was catching anything. What all good fisherman do, is they investigate. I went and bought the same exact lure the guy had who was catching Bluefish and we took up his fishing method down to the reel-in cadence. The problem was, he was on the opposite side of the Pier. The flow of the ocean was opposite. It wasn’t working on our side. We needed to cast with the flow, not against. I had come up with the idea that my son and I would switch fishing methods with the two poles we had. I would fish with the lure for a while, and my son would fish with the cut bait method on the other pole. Then we would switch. Several spots up from the man who was catching Blue’s, opened up, and so my son and I separated. We took turns. We had both caught fish at this point and it was my turn to get back on the Blue’s.

As I was casting and reeling the cadence, and out of the corner of my eye, 4 young girls were walking the Pier and they got just about to me and abruptly turned around and headed back to the area were my son was fishing. There is my 14 about to be 15 year old son, being approached by 4 girls at the beach. Here is the funny… I was quite amused by this. The longer they stayed, the more amused I became. I even snapped off a couple pictures. I was going to share one of them with you, but my judgement says don’t. My son did catch me looking over at him, while the girls where there and he just gave me this big smile. After about 10 or so minutes the girls left. As they were leaving they were saying there good bye’s and I heard them say “Have a nice day”. Then? One of the girls blurted out, “We love you Cole!” With that, I busted out laughing. It was a long belly laugh too. That’s the funny…

Here is the not: I have been pondering this: What if the same scenario would have happened in reverse with my daughter? What if 4 boys stopped by to talk to my daughter instead? What would have I done? First, I would have definitely ran interference. I would have, at a minimum stopped fishing for a minute and go over and insert myself into the situation. “The Check”. And if one of them would have said, ” We love you!” as they were walking away, I probably would have wanted to deck them! That scenario at best, may have been cute and possibly even amusing to a point. I definitely wouldn’t have busted out laughing, that’s for sure.

What’s up with that?

So this week, while you are having FUN, I ask: Examine yourself. Check your motives.

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE! HAVE FUN!
