At one time as a kid, the macadamia nut was one of my favorite nuts. My parents bought the nuts unshelled and we had a special basket with a nutcracker and picks. I actually still have THE SET. I recall the challenge of getting the entire nut out of the shell without breaking the nut. I would eat the macadamias over any of the other nuts.
I have a problem that has been lingering for a very long time. My father had a racist name for that nut. I thought it was funny when I was a kid. I carried that into my adult life. To confirm, over 20 years ago I laid down the racism that was given to me that I called balanced out by insulting not just certain races but ALL including my own. I defeated racism for both myself and my father and for that I am proud.
The problems IS this: I love nuts. I eat nuts almost every day. They are a healthy alternative to the sugar and salt carb filled garbage snacks that are abundantly available everywhere you go including my own house. Back to the Macadamia nut. Today as an adult the macadamia nut is my least favorite nut. See, pending the nut mixture type or salt type or salt volume or how old the nut is out of the shell, the taste changes. Sometimes the nut has a dull or even sort of sour taste to me pending the nut blend. For some reason I am not even that fond of the macadamia nut right out of the shell anymore either. My bigger problem?
Every time I encounter this nut as I am grabbing more from the mixture the racist name that was given to me enters my mind. I do nothing with that thought. It does bother me and has been weighing heavily on me more of late. I will say that because I do not like that nut as much anymore, I will push it to the side. I will eat it last or check and see if I like it in that mixture and or eat it with another nut. I have even been known to throw those nuts out.
I really want to get this crap name that was given to me out of my head. It’s just not right.
