Independence

Let’s talk about the car. The first car was called the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. It became official in 1886.

Most interestingly, the first long-distance journey in an improved 1888 version of the Motorwagen was completed by a woman. Yes! Bertha Benz would take an 180km trip (or 111 for us U.S. Standard folks) with her two sons who were just 14 and 15 at the time. For the record, she did not inform her husband she took the trip. She did so independently. Bertha is given credit for her daring feet that would cement the validity of the automobile in history.

Let’s talk about the bible. The story of the crucifixion of Jesus is known as the Resurrection. It became official on a Friday in AD 30 or AD 33.

John 20: 1-18 (summary) The discovery of the Empty Tomb was by a woman. Mary Magdalene would seek out Simon Peter and John to tell them “They have taken the Lord out of the Tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” Mary stayed at the tomb after the disciples left. The first person to Preach the Resurrection of Jesus was a woman. As she was crying and looked into the tomb, she witnessed two Angels who asked her why she was crying. Mary answered, “They have taken my Lord away” At this, Jesus appeared to her. (Although she did not know it was Jesus) The woman thought she was talking to a gardener who asked her why she was crying. “Sir if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him. Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She knew right away it was Jesus! Jesus gave her instructions, to tell the others. Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he said these things to her.

Independence is what took place in both these stories.

A woman made an independent choice to take it upon herself to lead. The Bertha Benz story is about a woman who had faith in a Motorwagen.  And chose to lean on that faith and take her two boys on an 180km round trip and not tell anyone. Her journey would change everything as we know it today. Do I need to say anything else to convince you about the automobile that we know today?

A woman made an independent choice to be the first to go to the tomb of Jesus. The story of Mary Magdalene is a story about a woman with great Faith. A woman made an independent choice to go the tomb not once but twice! And then she stayed. Her Faith provided us with the Good News! Her journey would change everything as we know it today.

Do I need to say anything else to convince you about the Jesus we know today?
