Tell It Tuesday – Driving 4 Jesus

This weekend was 11 hours of racing. The Indy 500 was first, followed by Nascar’s Coca-Cola 600 or in another reference, “The World 600”. Several race moments captured me, but four stood out the most.

  1. On the pace lap before the Indy 500 even started, a driver crashed his car while warming up his tires. It was complete driver error. The driver actually cried from the impact of this event. The Hype of it all. The disappointment for himself and his team and the disappointment for his family. Not to mention the impact of the money lost.
  2. At the finish of the Indy 500, the driver got out of his car and ran down the track towards his crew. The team and the media and what looked like easily 200 plus people, where following in celebration. The celebration went on for what seemed like forever.
  3. As we listened to the broadcast of the Nascar Coca-Cola 600, the excitement grew in our car. My driver, the #1 car, made his way through the pack from a dead last start with a back up car built the night before. Taking the lead of the race, just two laps to go. The festivities afterwards, began with his unique tradition, of a watermelon smash, followed by the driver climbing into the stands to celebrate with his fans. I reached into the back seat to my son who “gave me 5” in celebration.

4. Then it hit me: How we put people places and things on a pedestal. We build things on this earth to a level that is unimaginable to the normal human being. And we participate. Then I asked the simple question. What if we celebrated Jesus, like we celebrate things we create on this earth?
