The Lion or the Buffalo?

In my Facebook feed, there was a lion versus buffalo video. The raw footage of a lion attacking a buffalo captured my attention. I don’t know about you, but I root for the underdog in this one. My heart goes out to the buffalo. As I watched, I hoped the buffalo would win. The problem with my hope is that one of the beasts is most likely going to die in this fight.

Regardless of that fact, as I watched the video, I was all for the buffalo. The longer I watched, the more I wanted the buffalo to kill the lion. I wanted the buffalo to survive and ‘live happily ever after.’

The lion is a carnivore and lives off meat from killing other animals. These are facts we cannot change. The buffalo, on the other hand, is a herbivore, and that may preclude the animal from being ‘harmless’ when, in fact, they are very violent animals and one of the most feared animals to hunters in Africa. They will charge for no apparent reason. The buffalo’s demeanor is unassuming compared to the lion.

So why do I root for the buffalo when the two face off? It seems to me both are violent animals. Is it a lack of information and understanding? What if at some point in your life you were charged by a buffalo and you survived? Would you root for the lion or the buffalo?

The laws of nature are God’s business. He designed the animals, and he designed us. In many ways, we are similar to the animal kingdom. In many ways, we are not.

The law of the spirit is what Jesus wants us to follow. I don’t have answers to why I still root for the buffalo. What I do know is we need that lion to balance it out.

For us as humans, sometimes we need to be the lion. Other times we need to be the buffalo. We need to fight for what is right when it is right. We need to stand down when it is time to stand down.

Are you the lion or the buffalo?
