Abraham’s Oath
The complete Story of Abraham is found in Genesis 12-25. The Story of Abraham’s Oath is found in Genesis 12, 15, 17 and 22. This is not what you might think it is from the summary title. This is not merely Abraham making an oath to God. The focus is God making a promise to Abraham. It is often referred to as God’s Covenant to Abraham.
God Calls – In Genesis 12, God Calls Abraham to leave his homeland and trust Him.
“I will make you into a great nation.”
“I will bless you.”
“All peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
This begins a covenant relationship rooted in FAITH not law.
God Promises – In Genesis 15, the Lord instructed Abraham to bring him an animal in a ceremony of an ancient traditional covenant ritual. Typically in this ceremony the animal is cut in half and both parties walk between the pieces symbolizing, “May this happen to me if I break this covenant.” However, in this story only God (represented as a smoking fire pot and torch) passes through. Abraham does not.
God takes full responsibility for fulfilling the promise. The promise rests on God not Abrham’s perfection.
God Binds Himself – In Genesis 17, God appears to Abraham to establish the covenant. Abraham’s real name as we generally speak of him was Abram. God appears to Abram and changes his name to Abraham (Father of Many) as God binds Himself with His promise.
Genesis 17:4-7 NIV
4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram[a]; your name will be Abraham,[b] for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
God Provides – The oath is confirmed in Genesis 22, when Abraham obeys the Lord and offers his son Issac as a sacrifice to Him. An Angel from Heaven calls out to Abraham and instructs Abraham “Do not lay a hand on the boy.” In the thicket Abrham saw a ram caught by its horns to use as a sacrifice instead. The Angel of the Lord calls Abraham a second time,
Genesis 22:16 NIV
16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, your only son.
This story takes us even deeper. If you choose to read the full scripture, you can see the story emulates and is a foreshadowing of the coming of Jesus. Here is some evidence to consider of this fact:
- Abraham trusts in the Lord.
- Abraham gives his only son.
- Abraham loaded his donkey.
- On the 3rd day Abraham saw (the place God wanted him to take Issac)
- The Lord Blesses Abraham and his offspring and all nations because he obeyed.
Abraham named the place : TheLORD WillProvide.
God Calls Us, God Promises Us, God Binds Himself to Us, God Provides for Us.
