So what is it? Is it as direct as you think it is? It can be used in different contexts. It can be good or it can be bad.
I would guess that most of us see this term and think of a light switch. It’s probably the most common action we all take every day. We “Switch Flip” and get light – Jesus. Or we “Switch Flip” and get the opposite of light – dark.
“SWITCH FLIP” means a fast noticeable change in thinking, feeling or behavior. It demands immediate change or instant gratification.
The Dark “SWITCH FLIP”
Often used by Toxic Religious Teachers, and abusive people, to shame and control others.
Toxic Religious teacher: “If you were truly saved you would just stop sinning.”
- This is “Switch Flip” toxic teaching because this teacher is demanding instant perfection and denying reality of healing from trauma, or recovery from addiction and overall personal growth.
Toxic Religious teacher: “God showed me you are set apart from them. “You are chosen.” We never met anyone with such a special heart.” “You are like family.”
- This “Switch Flip” toxic teaching is not observed until the Toxic Religious teacher is challenged. At first it feels good. It is based on admiration. It is based on agreement. It is based on loyalty. It is based on submission. Then you ask a hard question. Then you set boundaries or disagree. Then this is the Toxic Religious teacher Response: “You are no longer agreeable.” “You are going against your values.” “You are stepping out of covering.”
Toxic Religious teacher: “Abstinence of sex before marriage is a key attribute of your value in the eyes of God.”
- While obedience to God is important, this statement ignores repentance. This statement ignores God’s Grace. This statement ignores God’s mercy. The “Switch Flip” in this case is patient and waits for marriage. Then the Toxic Religious teacher demands, “You must give him sex whenever he wants.” You must fill his need for sex because he needs sex more than you do.” “Having sex with your husband whenever he wants pleases God because you are not denying him.” “Switch Flip” again is – regurgitation in new form of blame “Sex during marriage is a key attribute of your value in the eyes of God.”
The Toxic teacher “SWITCH FLIP” Formula:
Love → Belonging → Approval
Doubt → Fear → Shame → Withdrawal of love
Repent → Warmth restored
This cycle creates trauma bonding.
The brain begins to associate obedience with safety.
The Light “SWITCH FLIP”
Loving Jesus Teacher: In Acts 9, Saul was persecuting Christians. On the road to Damascus, he encounters Jesus.
- Everything Changes – “Switch Flip” Jesus loves Saul regardless of his inadequacies and loves him and uses his weaknesses as strengths by giving him a new name Paul and a Calling him to Apostleship.
Loving Jesus Teacher: Luke 19 has the story of Zaccheaus. After he encounters Jesus:
- The “Switch Flip” is Zaccheaus exclaiming he will repay those he cheated. Repentance
Loving Jesus Teacher: Jesus says “When he came to himself” in the Parable of the Prodigal Son.
- The “Switch Flip” in this story is the son came to realize his selfish wild living was a rebellion towards his father and he repented and humbly returned home. Repentance and Humility
The Jesus “SWITCH FLIP” Formula
Love → Belonging → Security
Doubt → Curiosity → Conversation → Steady love
Repent → Growth → Continued belonging
This cycle creates secure attachment, not trauma bonding.
The brain begins to associate honesty with safety, not obedience with safety.
“SWITCH FLIP” WITH JESUS.
